Self study
Gelatin Printmaking is a low tech printmaking process that makes monotype printing available to everyone. It is spontaneous and often chaotic.
The focus of this workshop is to simplify the process to create a series of powerful prints.
We will simplify at most stages of the process.
- Our workspace and tools
- Set a goal for the class
- Choose one paper size
- Limit the color palette
- Use just a few stencils and mark making tools
These boundaries will create structure and bring awareness to the process. You will discover tools that work to create pleasing prints.
You will learn to identify different marks and become aware of how they are made. With that knowledge you will begin to build simple and yet visually powerful impressions.
Breakdown of the Lessons:
- Pre-course “lesson”– get ready for class by letting go of tools, supplies, papers and prints that you no longer use. This could be a joyful process of lightening your studio space and getting ready for a new approach. Create an opening for new work and new learning. Part 2 of the pre-course lesson is to set a goal for the class. This could be:
- to get printing again
- to explore mark making tools
- to see what is possible in the gelatin process
- to get more control or
- to just play
- to create a different kind of impression than usual
- to build a relationship with the process
- to make papers for other projects
- to make pleasing finished prints
- Is your goal about process or product?
Lesson Summary
- Circles and Threads – We will use threads and yarns to create delicate line designs. Then combine with simple circles to create lovely abstract designs. You will learn how to create high contrast images and compelling compositions
- Grasses and weeds – are found object stencils that can be used to create nearly photographic like images. These types of stencils can create immediate and satisfying success even for novice printmakers.
- Stamping tools and mock cyanotypes – We will use found object tools to make impressions in the ink. These detailed impressions can be stand alone prints or combined with stencils to create depth and texture.
