Don’t wait – Make the Plate – today

  • You have been thinking about gelatin printmaking.
  • It looks like fun but
  • You still have not tried it!

I am going to make it so easy that you will finally make the plate and explore this fabulous process.

You can do this in about 15 minutes.

Supplies:

small gelatin plate supplies

  1. Level counter top
  2. One box of gelatin, = 1 oz (28 gm) = 4 small packets
  3. One cup of water (237ml)
  4. Bowl
  5. Fork
  6. Small produce tray about 5″ x 7″

Make the Plate

This is a simplified recipe and it will last for about a week of printing. It needs to be kept in the refrigerator when you are not printing. That will give you enough time to play and decide if you like the process.

Then if you find that you love the process, you will probably want to make the longer lasting gelatin and glycerin plate, that does not have to be stored in the refrigerator.

mix 1 oz gelatin with 1/2 cup water
mix 1 oz gelatin with 1/2 cup tepid water and let sit and bloom

The simple steps:

  • Put some water on to boil.
  • Measure 1/2 cup (120 ml) tepid water into bowl
  • Sprinkle one box=4 packets=1 oz (28 gm) powdered gelatin onto the surface
  • Let set and bloom for 2 minutes – see picture above.
  • It will thicken and look like applesauce – do not stir.
  • All the gelatin should dissolve, pat or gently mix (over mixing will cause lumps and bubbles)
  • Add 1/2 cup (120 ml) of the hot boiling water – must be very hot!
  • Gently stir to dissolve all the gelatin crystals
  • If you have a few lumps don’t worry about it.

  • Carefully, pour completely dissolved gelatin into your level container. Pay attention and make sure it is all going into the container and not dribbling onto your counter top.
  • LEAVE IN PLACE until it has hardened. This could be 20 minutes or 2 hours depending on the weather and room temperature.
  • When harden put in refrigerator for a couple of hours. This makes it a little more sturdy.

While it hardens you can watch some videos, sign up for the free 3 part mini course or gather supplies to start printing.
