Multi-colored Gelatin Plate Monotype in one step

gelatin print by linda germain on map

I say one step but a more accurate word would be a multi colored gelatin plate monotype print in one pull.  There are lots of preparatory steps to this gelatin print.

  • cut and gather the map pages
  • pre-ink the glasses stencil with black/blue ink
  • set the stencil ink side down on the inked plate
  • pull a shaped print on another piece of paper
  • do a newsprint pick up
  • Roll the orange/yellow ink over the glasses stencil and on to the gelatin plate
  • carefully remove the glasses stencil from the gelatin plate
  • Place the map page on the plate and burnish
  • Sneak a peek to see if you have picked up all the ink possible
  • peel off and admire your gelatin plate monotype print

As I said yesterday, I like to make a lot of  gelatin prints to get a few great ones.  So when I made this print, I had to make several to produce a few awesome prints.  The less than lovely ones always have potential to become something else.

Graphite in this Gelatin Plate Monotype Print

gelatin plate monotype print by linda germainI just love this stencil that I used for today’s gelatin plate monotype print.  I was surprised because it is so simple, but I think that it is expressive.

gelatin plate monotype print

features:

  • speedball inks
  • index card
  • thread lines in the under layer
  • random writing in graphite
  • magenta background

I did something new.

  • To get the writing just inside the shape,
  • I placed a stencil over the gelatin plate monotype print to block out the magenta area.
  • Then I wrote from edge to edge.

I think it works.  I wanted it to flow naturally not look forced.

A horse Of course – gelatin prints

horse gelatin print by linda germainFor the ICAD challenge, I made a few gelatin prints with my horse stencil.  I became aware of:

  • It takes a few prints to get warmed up
  • Often the best gelatin prints happen when I don’t think  too much
  • It’s only an index card so try it
  • I can make several gelatin prints very fast
  • A commitment gets me into the studio for more gelatin printing.

Photographing Gelatin Prints – Off the Pier

gelatin print by linda germain Yesterday, I  created several gelatin plate monotype prints with the masking stencil of my brother fishing of the pier in Rye Harbor, NH.

Enjoy Photographing Gelatin Prints?

Today, I wanted to photograph them, so I could share them online.  Lighting is always a challenge for me.  I like to keep it simple and not have to correct in photoshop too much.

I like it to be as accurate as possible.  I think I would like to hire someone to help me get it right.  Every  time I set up to shoot, think it will be easier or different, but it is not.

  • too much light
  • not enough light
  • wrong color light
  • uneven light

I might have to investing in some more equipment to accurately photograph my gelatin plate monotype prints.

Photographing gelatin prints and art work is very important to online sales and communication.

I have figured out a couple of things:

  1. white paper background
  2. sticky putty to “pin them to the wall
  3. use the custom white balance
  4. use the tripos
  5. self timer
  6. zoom in a bit
