Gelatin plate print

Inks, stencils and Understanding the Gelatin Plate

©2012 linda germain Pre-inking stencils for gelatin Prints

Sometimes pre-inking the stencil works and sometimes it doesn’t.  Today I was trying to figure out why.  It is the balance of water in the ink, plate and air.  I think.  When the ink won’t release from the stencil on to the plate the easiest thing to do is mix that ink with one that does release.  I have  a couple of cans of very sticky ink and I am experimenting with leaving the lid off, to see if I can dry the ink out.  As I got a little frustrated this morning, I had to remind myself to go with the flow. Let Go and have some fun.  Do you like my new app?  PicFrame  I think I am going to enjoy it.

I am playing with some old film reels, round things,  tops from shampoo containers and a bit of thin yarn to make marks in the ink on the gelatin plate.

Gelatin Printing on slippery paper

gelatin print on slippery paper

So I learned to love freezer paper from a student I had up at Haystack, Catherine Worthington.  She shared that it was one of her favorite studio tools.  We used it to make masking stencils for gelatin printing.  That got me to thinking.  What if I printed right onto slippery paper?  What would the ink do?  What would the marks look like?  How would the ink layer?    I happened to have a pile of slippery card stock that I got from EXCL in Lynn.  So I started to play and I ended up with some happy surprises.  The paper creates surprising holes and dots and marks.  It also releases some of the ink back on to the gelatin plate. So if you think it then TRY IT!  Happy printing
