Trim up old crusty Gelatin Plate and Print

©2012 linda germain – Cut the Edge off old Gelatin and Print a series

As you may know I keep my gelatin plateas long as I can, because I love the unpredictable marks that is can create.  Sometimes it gets a hard edge, so a simple fix is to cut off the hard edge with a sharp razor blade.  I use a big square when I want to have a straight edge.

I spent the last few days putting together a 4 page pamphlet.  Wow it was a lot of learning.  I am having them printed with Magcloud.  Encaustic artist, Linda Cordner published a catalog of some of her art and she was please with the product so I thought I would give it a try.
Happy Printing!

Love Freezer Paper for Stencils

©2012 linda germain masking stencils that I love to use for gelatin printing

A friend, Catherine Worthington shared with me the wonders of freezer paper and I now have four rolls of the stuff in my studio.  Try cutting some shapes and making some gelatin prints.  Put the shiny slippery side down on the ink.   I am also having fun with my new Canon powershot s100.  Watch this video review by http://www.technobuffalo.com and you will want one too.

What to do with gelatin prints on fabric?

©2010 linda germain threads on threads,  gelatin print on fabric
Today, I am thinking about what to do with some of this gelatin printed fabric.  What would be an interesting use of the material?  Something functional?  Or something just for fun?  Could it be both?

Burnishing the Gelatin Plate for printmaking

©2012 linda germain getting ready for gelatin printing

So most of the time I burnish the gelatin plate with my hand.  That is usually enough to transfer the ink from the plate to the paper.  But sometimes I use the door knob or the block of wood above.  Burnishing is just the printmaking term for rubbing the pack of the paper to transfer the ink.  If you have done some gelatin printmaking then you know how fragile the plate can be in hot weather.  So don’t rub too hard or you will have those wonderful cracks in all your prints.  Happy printing!
