Screen print holiday cards and gifts

simple screen print fabric napkins with embroidery hoop and paper stencils

Screen printing is a good printmaking choice when you want to make a lot of the same impression over and over again.

Holiday cards and handmade gifts may be a great fit for this process.

The napkins above were quickly printed using a simple embroidery hoop screen, eyeball registration and paper stencils. I added the handwritten text after the screen printed marks had dried.

If you are interested in trying this method of screen printing, then I would like to share with you a private tutorial to help you get started.

Just add your email to the special screen printing interest list and I will send you the link to the tutorial.

Layering screen prints with thermofax screens

Notebook cover with thermofax screen print kit by linda germain

When I create textured papers for printing or collage, I think about:

  • Using a variety of lines, thin, thick, curved, even, uneven, and so on
  • Finding some harmony in the chaos by the time I am done and
  • Combining colors in a way the leads the viewer to a focus

I like to give myself time to come to a place where I am happy with the layers.

I also work on 10 or more papers at once so that I have lots of opportunities to succeed.

I have put together a kit of 8 thermofax screens that are great for creating layered, textured papers.

The kit includes:

  • butterfly
  • dragonfly
  • scribbly handwritting
  • “love”
  • “create”
  • 2 spyrograph drawings and
  • circular pattern

The imagery is simple enough to working to many different projects. You could use many of the screens together, as I did in today’s project or you could use them separately to make, cards, t-shirts, napkins, aprons, tablecloths and much more.

Thermofax prints for texture

I love lots of layers in a mixed media print. I like to draw the viewer in for a closer look into the layers of marks that make up the whole print.

Homemade Gelatin and glycerin plate print with Thermofax screen print

Screen printing with the thermo fax screen is great for times when you want to make lot’s of impressions of the same design. So today I played with 17 small prints and 4 book spreads and one spirograph screen.

Thermo fax screens are good for line drawings and details that you can’t get with other types of screen printing. I made this spirograph drawing, photocopied it and then burned a screen with my 3M transparency maker.

You only need a couple of screens to get started playing with this method of screen printing. I put together a kit of

  • 8 untaped screens, as shown below and
  • access to a lesson and 4 videos to prepare the screens,
  • pull prints, ideas for surfaces to print on and
  • how to care for your screen.

Time and tools for exploring Printmaking without a press

Time and Tools for Making monotypes and printmaking without a press

I gave myself the gift of taking a couple of online art classes very recently. It was quite fun being the student and not the teacher. I gained perspective that I think helps me to be an even better teacher.

The one thing that really hit home is that online classes can be time consuming. I understand how much of a commitment a class can be. And yet on the other hand, I see how easy it can be to sit on the side lines and wait until “later” to try the lessons.

My take away is that beauty of the online art class is that the student can

  • choose how active to be
  • choose when to do the lessons
  • choose to ask questions
  • learn a lot from others and still be in the comfort of home.

If you have been thinking about exploring Making Monotypes, with ink on paper and the homemade glycerin and gelatin plate, then you are in luck.

The next session of Make Monotypes is open for registration and class starts October 5th.
