ICAD – 61 Tiny Gelatin Prints

gelatin print on index card by linda germain - ICAD

A gelatin Print a day for 61 days

I  have always admired those people who can do a daily print or painting or whatever.  So I am jumping on board.  Daisy Yellow has been doing Index Card A Day (ICAD) for years.  Wow what commitment.  I know it will pay off in ways that I can not imagine.  I can commit to 61 days in June and July.

Yet, it is hard to make just one gelatin print.

Have you ever been able to make just one gelatin print?  Set up  takes a little time and usually I have to warm up with a few ugly gelatin prints.  My way is to work back and forth between several layers and several prints.  There is no rule that says I have to make just one.

“I am committed to making one index card gelatin print a day for the next 61 days.”

You will have to hold me accountable.  Maybe you could even join me.

Check out the details at Daisy Yellow Art.  See the work on the flickr group and the Facebook page.

Enjoy the weekend!

Photographing Gelatin Prints – Off the Pier

gelatin print by linda germain Yesterday, I  created several gelatin plate monotype prints with the masking stencil of my brother fishing of the pier in Rye Harbor, NH.

Enjoy Photographing Gelatin Prints?

Today, I wanted to photograph them, so I could share them online.  Lighting is always a challenge for me.  I like to keep it simple and not have to correct in photoshop too much.

I like it to be as accurate as possible.  I think I would like to hire someone to help me get it right.  Every  time I set up to shoot, think it will be easier or different, but it is not.

  • too much light
  • not enough light
  • wrong color light
  • uneven light

I might have to investing in some more equipment to accurately photograph my gelatin plate monotype prints.

Photographing gelatin prints and art work is very important to online sales and communication.

I have figured out a couple of things:

  1. white paper background
  2. sticky putty to “pin them to the wall
  3. use the custom white balance
  4. use the tripos
  5. self timer
  6. zoom in a bit

Want to make some gelatin prints  of your own?

Join me for a printmaking workshop soon.

Gelatin Printing in the Studio

gelatin printing in the studio I did some gelatin printing in my studio today.  I decided to create a series of prints from the masking stencil that I created from a picture of my brother fishing off the pier in Rye Harbor.

I did a couple of different techniques that helped to produce a strong series of gelatin prints.

  • I cut my bristol board to size first while I still had clean hands
  • I put a piece of removable tape on the edges of the bristol board so I would have a place to hold the gelatin print with my dirty fingers
  • I printed several practice pieces
  • I experimented with different mark making tools
  • I removed the tape right away so it would not become permanently stuck to the gelatin print.

I made about 16 gelatin prints with the intention of creating 10 finished prints.  That was a new approach for me too – to have a product goal.  I ended up with 9 finished prints – close to goal.

Would you like to come to my studio and make a series of gelatin prints?  If so then, check out the workshop schedule.  Hopefully there will be a date that works for you.

If you are new to gelatin printing watch a few of my videos and check out the flickr page to see what other folks are doing with their gelatin prints.

Happy printing!

Mixed Media Gelatin Prints on the table

Mixed media gelatin prints by linda germain
Gelatin plate prints

I managed to get to the studio and make a few 4″ x 6″ mixed media gelatin prints with my power boy masking stencil.  I used the golden open acrylics too.

I also used the masking frame to get the nice clean finished edge.  That is a challenge for dirty fingers me.

I have been letting myself get stopped by my thoughts and judgements lately and by the need to produce a product.  Hmm?  How do we get separated from our purpose?

I think I was looking outside myself too much.

Hey if you need/want to come play and print with me then check out my gelatin printmaking workshop schedule and sign up for a class.

Happy Printing!

Goal for today

gelatin workshop

This is huge and why does the text sit right on the edge of the image and not  wrap.  I find typing in  WP very frustrating. It did it again.  I would like the text to wrap and it is not wrapping.  I need to go to Yoga and come back with fresh outlook.  So 3 times or more to get the image in.

  1. it is not what you see is what you get
  2. maybe I need to change themes
  3. I am not using the features that attracted me to the theme
  4. I really don’t like the blog post format with the author and stuff on the side
  5. but I want to make a decision and move forward
  6. I am going crazy

So what can I learn from this process?
