First snow inspires today’s masking stencil

Today I woke up and saw some white stuff on the roof tops below me. Was it heavy frost or snow? A short walk confirmed that it was the first snow of the season.

I started with a 6″ square and cut the snowflake smaller as I tweaked the design.

The paper is weak and thin. That makes it easy to  cut but requires a gentle touch when using it as a stencil on the gelatin plate.

I made several prints. Letting the ink build  up on the stencil and playing with the gold background.

Not sure what I will do with these prints, but it was fun to cut the stencil and make a few prints. Here is a quick video on how to fold the paper and cut a 6 pointed snowflake.

Day 20 #SEEdrawPrint – HOPE trees

paper chain of christmas trees

Today I cut some foam evergreen trees inspired by  a chain of trees I cut last summer. I like the organic unevenness of the branches.

I cut 3 different sizes with the hope that they would work together to create some cards. They were easy to draw and cut with little scissors.

Then I test printed the relief blocks on some paper with speedball block printing ink, gold, yellow, green, brown and blue.

I added a star to the top of the tree and the Hope stamp below and then a few dark blue dots. I may not use all the trees together but I do like how the littlest tree with the medium tree as shown above.

I think I will have some fun playing with these stamps.

Have you tried  this method of printmaking without a press? Go for it!

Angel stencil for making ornaments

Today I modified a stencil that I used a few years ago. I reduced the size and tweaked the shape to fit on the circular wooden ornament.

drawing to cut a stencil for printmaking

I am using the traditional “hole” stencil, so I had to build a bridge to the space between the arm and the face. Usually you want to build bridges in a place that is a natural break in the design.

Build bridges to keep the stencil stable

I printed several impressions of the angel on some gelatin prints. And they printed up quite nicely. My first one was a bit heavy handed with the paint, so the edges were a bit jagged.

I think that I will paint and texturize some of the wooden discs and stencil print directly on them with the angel. It is a bit easier that way.

Stencil silhouette for quick printmaking

Today day is day 18 of my 30 day challenge to #SEEdrawPrint. I did not see any reindeer flying over head, but I like the magic of the holiday season, so I searched for some inspiration.

drawing into a stencil for printing

I did some sketches and transferred the shaped silhouette to a manilla folder. I cut out the “hole” stencil and the masking stencil. That way I can use both pieces to create some holiday cards. I will use the cut out masking stencil with the gelatin plate.

When cutting stencils always use a fresh sharp blade and cut out the tiny details first. Cutting stencils is not as hard as it may seem and it allows you to make one of a kind personal images.

I like the texture and colors of the gelatin plate monotype background that I chose for the print above. I gathered 4 or 5 printed papers and added the reindeer silhouette. This way I can see what colors and textures to use for a future set of prints.

Do you have a few background papers that you could add a stenciled image to and create some cards or prints?

A Trace monoprint of twiggy tree

Today I did not have lots of time, so I did a quick trace monoprint of a twiggy tree.

trace monoprint of stylized tree

I love the fuzzy line that is characteristic of a trace monoprint. I used a newsprint pick up to lift off a little bit of the plate ink. Then I put the print paper on the ink and transferred the ink to the print paper with a pencil tracing of the original drawing.
