Fun with Trace Monoprints by Linda Germain

Last week I was experimenting with some sketches and creating some foam plates for printmaking and then I branched out and did some trace monoprints. For some reason I am interested in horses these day. I like the prehistoric cave like feeling that I get from this print. I really enjoy printing on alternative papers, like books and recycled envelopes.

Gelatin Printing with stencils

Winter and the cold do funny things to my Daniel Smith water soluble inks. So I have been playing with the speedball block printing inks. They are so easy to clean up and do do seem to mind if the studio is only 55 degrees.
It amazes me that I can come to the studio and do the same thing, lay down “stencils” and make marks with stamping tools and still come up with something new and interesting.
I used a simple paper stencil for the horse image and stamped into the inked plate with the end of a 2″ by 4″. I love roots, so I used a pressed root as a “stencil” too.
The new ideas that I had today were: 1. to gently remove the “stencil” before lifting the paper up all the way, that way I minimize registration troubles and get the details of the “ghost”, and 2. to print on papers that have been sliced into squares and then piece the print together.
