Mixed Media – stamp making + artist book workshop
This class is an introduction to several mixed media techniques with a focus on making tiny stamps. We will use the slipknot binding to create a small book, as our substrate.
You can explore a little gelatin printmaking to create interest in your book.
I offer a bit of collage to add texture to the pages.
Several of the lessons focus on making foam stamps that can be inked with water based broad tip markers.

Lately I have been exploring portable non-toxic mark making methods. And I have landed on small foam stamps that can be “inked” with broad tipped markers.
Like most fun and easy art techniques, the process can become addictive. So now I have trays of little stamps for using with my sketchbooks.
These stamps are made from sticky back foam, glossy flat cardboard and masking tape.

I use the stamps:
- to make borders
- to print all over patterns
- to add a focus
- to fill in blank spaces and unite elements
- to add to gelatin prints
- to print words or messages
I have combined the stamp making process with a unique book form that uses other printed papers. It is the slipknot book binding technique. This form is great for active journaling because it lies flat and can be flipped and folded on to itself to create a nice flat surface.
I have made several of these books with ten to 20 gelatin prints combined with as many blank pages. I alternate gel print and then blank page. This gives me something to respond to and helps use up my piles of gelatin prints.
It might be a nice idea to make a series of stamps to work together.
I made a series of birds, trees, and flowers. Simple geometric shapes are also a great way to get started.
