I love the fuzzy line that is created with a trace monoprint. I used white card stock and Daniel Smith water soluble block printing ink. The print is 5″ x 7″.
Some famous artists who did trace mono prints include:
- Degas
- Klee
- Gauguin

Okay, what’s a trace monoprint, and what yarn/string is the fuzzy line?? Love this print.
It is not on the glycerin plate. You roll out a thin layer of ink on a palette, and then place the print paper on top of the ink and draw on the back of the print paper. So you need to use ink that does not dry too fast. Here’s on I really like. The black line is the trace mono print technique. http://www.lindagermain.com/2009/08/light-blue-gelatin-prints/
I am trying to figure how it works…Did you put black ink on your palette ? If so the back of the paper should be black and the lines white, no ?… Definitely have to try ! I love the idea and the result.
Cool! Can you explain the difference between a monoprint and monotype?
Hi Cathy,
So many other people can explain it better. Generally a mono print has a repeatable matrix. Here’s a good link. http://www.mgne.org/MonotypeDefined.shtml
Linda
I have seen this done to good effect on fabric. Will give this a go!
Cool! Thanks so much and new process to explore! Love it.
