What could be scary about gelatin printing?
Generally nothing, but sometimes fear of ruining a piece or making a mistake creeps in to my head.
That is when I challenge myself to do something scary/brave/risky.
It could be:
- sewing into the gelatin print
- tearing the gelatin monotype into shapes
- spritzing the gelatin plate print with alcohol
- rolling over the print with a very dark layer of ink or a very light layer of ink
- turning the print upside down or sideways to change the perspective
- give yourself unlimited supply of paper and just keep printing without judgement
or
It could be so small that in the end you will wonder why you were scared.
Take a small step in the direction of you goals or desires and you build momentum. That is why you could do something scary/brave today.
Hey if you do something brave/scary share it, if you dare. 🙂
Happy Printing,
Linda
I know what you mean. After you have successes the fear of failure becomes more intense.
Hi Linda, I’ve been following your monoprinting and love the pieces you create with it. I’m trying to create ethereal-looking fabric and gave monoprinting a try. The patterns on the fabric were great, but not ethereal so I risked ruining them and I used shiva paintstiks and made rubbings on top and smeared the paintstik marks. I got pretty much what I needed. I posted photos of it on my blog. The resulting fabrics actually look better than the photos show. They have great depth and complexity but still have an ethereal quality.
It is inspiring to hear your stories and experiences Regina and Roberta. Keep playing!
On one of my favorite monoprinting days, I turned the gelatin out onto my sheet of glass and . . . the gelatin broke into five or six pieces. After briefly considering tossing them all in the trash, I ended up pulling a number of small prints off the jagged pieces of gelatin. Not all worked out, but I had a great time and ended up printing some things that are among my favorites: http://www.flickr.com/photos/djangocat/sets/7215761647737977
So cool to be open to something wonderful happening. Thanks for sharing
